The wait is over! The Town of Collingwood is pleased to invite the public to come play at newly re-constructed Sunset Point Park Playground, starting next week. After experiencing some delays due to supply chain challenges, the park is ready to be enjoyed by all.
The construction fencing will come down just in time for the Grand Re-opening which will be held Wednesday, October 19th at 5:30 p.m.
The playground at Sunset Point is a special amenity within the Town of Collingwood. The location on the waterfront, the integration with Collingwood’s most highly sought after park, and a long standing treasured place for families to come and enjoy together, are all indicators of this parks special meaning in the community. Sunset Point Park won for two categories in the 2022 Collingwood Connection & The Wasaga/Stayner Sun's Readers’ Choice Awards for Day Trip Destinations and Local Tourist Attraction.
“The Sunset Point Park Playground is one of the most highly anticipated park projects the Town has seen in recent history,” says Mayor Keith Hull. “Kids of all ages, from across the community and from a variety of backgrounds and abilities, were engaged using an innovative consultative approach, to provide their insights in shaping the vision for this cherished community park into what their needs are. As a result, they will be able to see themselves in the finished product and a broad spectrum of youth will enjoy this outcome today and, in the decades ahead.”
This playground re-build has revitalized the park environment, creating an inclusive and accessible area for active play, and supporting healthy development for children across the community. The playground also addresses the 7 Modes of Play that were the subject of our public engagement sessions. The goal was to create a final design that includes a variety of play features, surfacing needs, earthworks to create landforms, accessibility provisions and enhancements, integration of water into the play experience, and connections to the natural environment.
The 2.33-hectare playground at Sunset Point Park, previously known as EnviroPark, was constructed in 1993. The playground was originally built out of wood and concrete and designed around the theme of water protection and the environment. Park features, including the sand surfacing, did not meet current accessibility standards. After 26 years of community use, this playground was due for replacement.
