Wastewater Services
The Collingwood Wastewater Treatment Plant provides the treatment of residential and commercial wastewater. Raw sewage travels through the sewer system, boosted by seven pumping-stations, which is then treated by the conventional activated sludge plant and then discharged into the Collingwood harbour.

FATS, OILS AND GREASE (FOG)
Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) are some of the most common culprits of sewer pipe blockages. FOG's are usually washed down the sink as liquids but become solids or highly dense liquids quickly. As they solidify, they take the shape of the pipe and can fully clog the opening.
Common FOG's include:
- Butter, Margarine & Lard
- Food Scraps
- Sauces
- Grease from meat (ex: Bacon)
- Salad Dressings
- Dairy Products (yogurt, milk, ice cream)
- Cosmetics
FOG's should never be washed down the sink or flushed in the toilet. These items should be disposed of in your green bin and/or household composter. These items can also be put into FOG CUPS and then disposed of in your green bin.
MEDICATIONS
Prescription medication, over the counter medication or vitamins should never be disposed of using your household drainage or garbage.
As a result of the new Health Stewardship Association, medication / pharmaceuticals are no longer being accepted at Household Hazardous Waste Depots in the County of Simcoe. To find the closest drop-off location to you visit:

WIPES
Although many wipes are advertised to be "flushable" and "biodegradable" they are designed to be stronger than facial tissue and often contain plastic fibres, which reduces their ability to decompose. When wipes are flushed, they gather in low spots in both public and private systems and are the leading cause of clogs. They also have the ability to wrap around equipment at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and require removal, which is costly and laborious.

- Baby Wipes
- Bathroom Wipes
- Personal Hygiene Wipes
- Disinfecting Wipes
- Floor Cleaning Wipes
- Disinfecting Wipes
- Dusting Wipes
- Toilet Bowl Scrub Pads
- Magic Erasing Wipes
Please do not flush wipes of any kind. These items should be disposed of using the household garbage bin.
